On September 18th, thousands of gay service members and veterans and supporters celebrated the one-year anniversary of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”  

A major reason for the repeal was the advice of Admiral Mike Mullen, former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the Senate Armed Services Committee in February, 2010, when he said: 

“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by

the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and 

women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow

 citizens.  For me, it comes down to integrity – theirs as individuals

and ours as an institution.”
