“If the Boy Scouts of America makes a policy change allowing openly gay leaders and Scouts, chartered organizations that support local troops will have some decisions to make.
“On Monday, the BSA released a statement that said it is “discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation.”
If the policy changes, it will be up to the individual chartered organizations to decide whether or not they’d ban gay members or leaders, and “would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs,” according to the statement.
“Roger Gant III, chairman of the Alamance District of the BSA’s Old North State Council, compared the proposed change to a transfer of power from the federal government to a local government.
‘It gives them the ability to focus on their constituents,’ he said of chartered organizations that sponsor individual Boy Scout troops. ‘A particular group or leader is not going to have to change their own views. ”
